CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago Police Department Marine Unit officer is warning people to pay attention to the weather forecast and not to take Lake Michigan for granted following the rescue of three people Tuesday afternoon.
The waves in Lake Michigan were kicking up when the 911 call came in.
"They did have cell phones with them, out on the water, which was surprisingly in dry bags," Officer Joe Doane with the CPD Marine Unit said two people were in a kayak and the third on a paddle board a mile off Montrose Beach.
He said they knew they were not going to make it back to shore.
"They were predicting winds, gale-force winds. There was probably 3- to 4-foot waves out there at the time," Doane told WBBM Newsradio.
The paddle boarder was in the water.
"The paddle board blew away. It was almost like a kite. As we were going out there, we could see the paddle board flying up in the wind," Doane said.
Doane said all three had life jackets and they were pulled onto a police boat and so were the kayak and paddle board.
"Lake Michigan's weather can change in just minutes," Doane reminded.
He said everyone was very happy to be back on shore as we talked at the marine unit headquarters in DuSable Harbor.
