CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The family of a college student who drowned in Lake Michigan last month is holding on to hope the Chicago Park District will agree to put up life rings. Nineteen-year-old Miguel Cisneros drowned Aug. 22 swimming off Pratt Pier, which doesn’t have any life rings.
Cisneros’ family met with representatives of the park district after the department removed life rings near Pratt Pier for a third time that members of the Rogers Park community had put up.
Cisneros’ cousin told CBS2 they’re not simply going to wait and hold their breath but the meeting did not discuss the rings. His mother wants that to find peace.
“This is not just about him. I hope this is Miguel's legacy — to save more lives. That will make the pain that I'm going through a little more bearable,”
Ald. Maria Hadden said she’s cautiously optimistic about the park district changing its mind while state Rep. Kelly Cassidy, who represents that neighborhood, is pursuing a change in law.
