Chicago police say a protective vest saved an officer’s life as he tried to break up an early-morning fight on the Far South side. That fight turned into a shooting, and now, the city’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating.
A police News Affairs spokesperson confirmed an officer shot and wounded two people just before 1:00 am Sunday during the incident on Davol Street, near 115th and Vincennes in the Morgan Park neighborhood.
The department says officers were called to a fight involving a number of people, including an offender described as a 35-year-old man and an 18-year-old man described as a victim.
Police were reportedly trying to separate the people involved when investigators say the offender’s gun went off, and the victim and a police officer were shot.
Another officer fired back, hitting the offender and -- inadvertently, says the department – the victim.
The officer was shot in the chest, but News Affairs says his protective vest saved his life, and he’s already been discharged from the hospital.
The offender and victim were also sent to hospitals in fair condition.
