CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago’s largest Muslim civil rights organization is calling for the firing of the president of the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police -- who is already under fire for controversial social media posts.

One social media post by FOP President John Catanzara was disparaging to Muslims, according to the Chicago Police Board.

That post read: “Savages they all deserve a bullet.”

Ahmed Rehab, executive director of the Council on American Islamic Relations in Chicago, denounced Catanzara’s comments.

“The Muslim community is extremely appalled and shocked by these comments,” Rehab said.

Catanzara defended his controversial posts, which were made between November 2016 and February 2018.

“Any group that is OK with genital mutilation of little girls as a religious practice is so far on the fringe of society, I could really give a damn what they think,” Catanzara  said.

Ahmed Rehab said his organization does not condone female genital mutilation and added that the vast majority of Muslims condemn it.

Muslims comprise 2% of Chicago’s population, according to a Pew Research Center study.
