CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Public School students from across the city gathered at the Museum of Science and Industry to reimagine STEM on Thursday.

"I want to make sure people receive the message: Not only do they belong but we need you," said Kelli Easterly, Executive Director of the Department of STEM at CPS.

Easterly organized the Reimagine STEM event following her experience as a CPS parent and Black female seeking out a STEM career. She said she hopes it helps students feel empowered and changes their perspective of the field.

"We have an underrepresentation of African American and LatinX workers in those (STEM) fields," said Easterly.

Many students face challenges out of their control from the beginning of their educational journey. Racial disparities in STEM start as early as kindergarten, studies show. Eastlery said she hopes CPS and parents can provide more support and encouragement for students in STEM fields.

"We are both very passionate about engaging families in STEM education," said Dr. Jessica Chavez, Chief Learning and Community Partnerships Officer at MSI.

CPS partnered with MSI and invited families to the museum following their students' progress report collection. Throughout the gallery, students and their families were able to visit different STEM stations, creating projects and learning about local initiatives along the way. One activity included a mechanical robot racing station.

"We are all about inspiring the next generation of innovators," Chavez said, "We want MSI to be the city's museum and to be a part of the DNA of how we raise the next generation."

Chavez said her team wanted to remove all barriers for students and families attending the event. They helped arrange for free transportation, parking, admission and snacks. CPS plans to partner with other Chicago institutions, including the Field Museum and The Shedd Aquarium, to bring more opportunities for students.
