Some Chicago Public Schools students are taking center stage, on a major stage, today.
“This is our second annual Choral Fest.”
Which gives hundreds of CPS singers the opportunity to rehearse, learn and perform here at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
“For me, it’s exposure.”
Da’Sean Wilson is a music teacher at Dyett High School for the Arts, one of six schools represented at Choral Fest.
“A lot of the kids that I work with don’t get to normally experience things like this in their everyday lives. It’s nice being able to take them somewhere beyond 51st and Cottage.”
Kerry Tyus is one of those Dyett singers.
“It was a new form of learning for me. It was really communicative and fun.”
Students aren’t the only ones having fun. Just ask Taylor Ott, a Teaching Artist at the opera house.
“This is an opportunity for them to sing with 200 plus people. That’s really powerful, just the amount of sound that comes out of that many people.”
