CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A group that helps Chicago Public Schools students says its people are seeing a lot of stress and anxiety in the classrooms now that the kids are back after COVID-19 shutdowns.

Students have been back in school for about three months and Lo Patrick, head of integrated students supports for the group Communities and Schools of Chicago said the adjustments haven't been easy.

"Initially, we were seeing more fights happening, because students hadn't been around each other for a year and a half and they were really having to figure out how to be in community again," she said.

Patrick also said the group is seeing high levels of stress among teachers as well. "Principals are realizing it too and they're asking us to support teachers more formally than in the past."

Jane Mentzinger, CEO of CIS, said lots of students and teachers are grieving as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

"There has been a lot of grieving going on about the loss of not just being in school, but could be the loss of parents or caregivers or people in their family as well as loss of jobs for people they know."
