Chicago Public school students are staying engaged this summer, thanks to the district's Career and Technical Education Summer Camps.

Students attending CTE Summer Camps learn about fields such as video game programming, culinary arts, cosmetology, broadcast technology and pre-law, as well as various trades, including carpentry and electrician skills.

"It's very hands-on," says incoming Freshman Devin, who was working on a junction box at Prosser Career Academy, "You get to actually use it, you get to plug it into the wall to see if it works or not."

Katie Konwinski is teaching video game programing, where her students were learning about Angry Bird and Mine Craft.

What may look like play to some is actually prep for potential careers.

"They are learning CAD [Computer-Aided Design], they're learning sizing and 3D, they're actually learning how to do their X, Y and Z coordinates, a lot of math is involved, as well," Konwinski said.
