The makeup of some of the best public schools in Chicago would change, beginning in the fall of 2023, under a new CPS proposal.

The CEO of the Chicago Public Schools wants to change the admissions system for highly sought-after selective enrollment schools.

The move is designed to open the door to more low-income students - and would make it harder for higher-income students to get into elite programs and schools like Walter Payton College Prep and Northside College Prep.

The way it stands now, almost a third of classroom seats at selective enrollment schools are given to students based on their grades and test scores.

Critics of the current admission policy say the makeup of the student body doesn’t reflect the makeup of the city. CPS said that group is mostly white and Asian - and affluent.

Under one new CPS proposal, no seats would be set aside for students based on their grades and test scores alone - and all students would be admitted based on where they live in the city, in addition to their grades and test performance.
