CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A stretch of the outbound Stevenson Expressway was shutdown for more than six hours following an overnight fatal crash.
All lanes were reopened at about 8:30 a.m. This came after Illinois State Police closed all outbound lanes, from Central to Harlem, for the majority of morning drive.
The accident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. when a Honda HR-V rear ended semi-trailer truck. Speed may played a factor in the collision, ISP said.
The driver of the Honda, a 31-year-old man from Summit, was pronounced dead at the scene.
All traffic was diverted off at Central as troopers investigated and IDOT cleaned up the scene. The closure resulted in a five-mile backup.
