(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Christine Geovanis, a longtime Chicago Teachers Union leader, died earlier this week from cancer.
The Chicago Teachers Union remembered Geovanis, who joined the union's communications team under Karen Lewis before rising to communications director, as a "trade unionist, organizer and justice warrior."
Geovanis had been on medical leave for the past year due to her diagnosis.
Although many knew Geovanis for her work with the teachers union, she was also a vocal advocate for racial and social justice, police reform and more.
"A lot of the transformation we are seeing in Chicago today — building a city that works for the many, not the few — has its roots in Chris' work to root out injustices and move people to change them," said CTU President Stacy Davis Gates in a statement.
Family and friends said donations can be made to the Palestine Children's Relief fund, something the Chicago native was very passionate for.
Geovanis was 64.
The union said all of those who work to create a "more just city and world" will "miss Chris' fighting spirit, her wry sense of humor, her warmth and her steadfast camaraderie."
