(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The mayor of Danville has ignored the advice of internal counsel and threats from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and he has gone ahead with an ordinance restricting abortion.

Public comment at the Danville City Council Meeting on Tuesday was what one would expect when abortion is the topic: Passionate arguments on both sides, and there was this practical point.

“Your vote does not reflect your view on abortion,” one resident said. “Your vote reflects your view and your willingness to subject the city and its taxpayers to tremendous risk.”

The council was split down the middle. Danville Mayor Rickey Williams Jr. broke the tie.

“I vote yes,” Williams said.

With that, the ordinance — which deems Danville a “sanctuary city for the unborn” — was approved. It bans the receipt of medications and instruments that can be used for abortions.

Prior to the vote, Dr. Bethany Halloran said the medications have other uses.

“Put simply: It will unnecessarily endanger the lives of women and could very well lead to preventable death,” Halloran said.

The ACLU said it is unlawful, unenforceable, and it promised to challenge the ordinance.
