(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The federal Drug Enforcement Administration is targeting Chicago and almost three dozen other cities as part of its latest attempt to fight violence related to drug trafficking.

This new effort is called “Operation Overdrive.”

“Rather than relying on bottom-up casework investigative work, where we’re making one case, making one arrest and making one prosecution and building up from there, this approach is relying on intelligence-gathering at the highest levels,”  Luis Agostini, spokesman for the DEA’s Chicago division, said.

The goal is to decrease drug overdose deaths and gun violence associated with illegal drugs.

Among the 33 other cities where the DEA is focusing its Operation Overdrive, Peoria is the only other Illinois city on the list.
