(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Reports of dead geese at Lombard Lagoon and elsewhere in the area have prompted an investigation.
The Chicago Bird Collision Monitors report finding several dozen dead or sick birds at ponds in the area. This is the organization whose volunteers pick up birds that are injured or killed flying into buildings, primarily during migration.
The geese that were captured were examined at the DuPage Wildlife Conservation Center.
X-rays showed lead pellets in their stomachs. The center says one goose ingested 805 bird shot pellets that were removed from its stomach.
The birds can also be poisoned by lead weights used for fishing.
Geese showing signs of lead poisoning may stumble or appear lethargic. They may also have a weak high-pitched honk.
Anyone who sees birds exhibiting these symptoms should report it to Chicago Bird Collision Monitors by calling 773-988-1867.
The birds can be treated, with varying degrees of success, depending on the level of lead poisoning.
