(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Later this month, the Mooseheart home for children in Kane County will be cutting down a tree where bald eagles have nested for more than 10 years.

The dead pine tree that juts out of a parking lot is in danger of coming down in a storm. Hoping to pre-empt that from happening, Mooseheart officials received a federal permit to remove the tree and the nest.

"It's in the best interest of the eagle pair to take the tree down in the non-breeding season,” Cathy Pollack of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said.

In nature, nests come down all the time, she notes.

The eagles are expected to build a new nest over the winter.

"It has been an honor to witness eagle life -- to watch newborn eaglets grow into young eagles ready for test flights, hunting, and adulthood,” Mooseheart Executive Director Gary Urwiler said.

“Unfortunately, time and weather have not been kind to their current nesting site."
