KANE COUNTY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Democratic lawmakers are responding to criticism by the Kane County sheriff over the state’s ban on certain guns that’s tied up in court. They responded Friday to the public rebuke with a letter to residents.
Sheriff Ron Hain told a Kane County Committee Wednesday he was embarrassed to be a Democrat after his party passed the controversial gun ban. Senators Cristina Castro and Karina Villa as well as Representatives Barbara Hernandez, Maura Hirschauer and Anna Moeller said they are also embarrassed Hain has a D by his name.
"We do need a more comprehensive approach to mental health treatment, we need to expand access to opportunity, and we need to bridge political and cultural divides, but no serious approach to gun violence can ignore the ease of access to weapons of war," they wrote.
The lawmakers accused Hain of spreading misinformation and stoking controversy - writing that several members of law enforcement testified in support of the bill.
Hain responded with a letter of his own saying only one of the lawmakers reached out to him about the bill and they ignored his feedback.
"The inflammatory language of their rebuttal speaks to their continued ignorance of facts, laws, and the totality of the constitution."
Both sides claim to be interested in collaboration.
