(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The National Democratic Party has reached agreement with Chicago labor unions to smooth the way for the party's big political convention here next year.

The Democratic National Committee and the Chicago Federation of Labor have signed a document that CFL President Bob Reiter characterizes as a ''labor peace'' agreement for the 2024 Democratic National Convention.

“In short, a labor peace agreement is a commitment that an employer will treat their workers with respect and dignity and, in turn, those workers will ensure that business runs smoothly,” he said.

DNC Chairman Jamie Harrison says the accord – struck a year before the convention -- is the earliest ever that such an agreement has been signed.

Mayor Brandon Johnson, who attended the signing ceremony at McCormick Place, said the agreement also ensures that convention benefits reach communities that have long been ignored.

Under the deal, the party and unions will collaborate ahead of and during the DNC in Chicago without strikes or other conflicts.
