(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A deputy who tried to revive a blood-covered man ended up fatally shooting him instead when the person woke up and lunged at the officer with a meat cleaver, authorities said.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a home in unincorporated Round Lake Wednesday afternoon for a report of a bleeding man who needed help, police said.
Officers reportedly found an unconscious man lying on a mattress with “a significant amount of blood" around him. One of the deputies attempted life-saving efforts when the man woke up and grabbed a nearby meat cleaver, officials said.
The man lunged at the deputy and another person in the home, police said. Although the officer retreated, officials said, the man continued charging at him with the cleaver, and the deputy shot him.
Paramedics began life-saving measures, but the unidentified man was later pronounced dead at an area hospital, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said. The Lake County Major Crime Task Force was expected to conduct an investigation into the death.
The sheriff’s deputy involved in the shooting was taken to the hospital for an evaluation, police said.
