DES PLAINES (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A Des Plaines police officer shot and killed a man Wednesday night after responding to an apartment complex to assist paramedics with a man in apparent mental distress.
It was just after 7:30 p.m. when police were called to the apartment building on the 1400 block of Thacker Street.
“While enroute, officers were advised that the male subject was breaking things, possibly having a psychotic breakdown, and potentially had access to an axe or machete,” police said in a statement.
He’s identified as 55-year-old Scott MacDonald.
“Officers arrived on the scene and the situation escalated when they unexpectedly encountered Mr. MacDonald in the common hallway of the building and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” the statement went on to say.
There’s no explanation of the encounter. MacDonald was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave.
The department said an investigation is being conducted by an outside regional task force, the Major Case Assistance Team.
