(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A carjacking suspect and a Kane County sheriff’s K-9 were killed Wednesday afternoon after a police pursuit and officer-involved shooting in the far western suburbs, authorities said.

A Kane County deputy initiated pursuit of a vehicle in South Elgin around 2 p.m. because it was wanted in connection with a vehicular hijacking that had just occurred in Aurora, police said.

The chase ended with the suspect vehicle being stopped at Randall Road and Fabyan Parkway near Geneva, the Kane County Sheriff's Office said.

The suspect reportedly exited his vehicle with a handgun and struggled with a police dog that had been deployed to subdue him. An "exchange of gunfire" occurred, and the suspect was fatally wounded, the sheriff's office said.

He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The K-9, a Dutch Shepherd named Hudson, also was killed, Sheriff Ron Hain said.

“This dog’s been in service with us for about six, years now. This is a big loss for us,” he told reporters at a news conference Wednesday evening.

Three deputies were taken to the hospital to be checked out, the sheriff said. An investigation by the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force continues.
