DES PLAINES, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An upcoming event at the Des Plaines Theater is causing an uproar by people who are upset it’s being organized by people and groups that have made statements critical of the gay and queer community.
The Des Plaines Theater is owned by the city of Des Plaines, but is not run by the city and next month there’s going to be an event called “Out of the Echo Chamber: Coalition for Kids”, which critics say has organizers who are opposed to the LGBTQ community.
"I just find this appalling. They can go to a private hall," an anonymous resident said at last night’s City Council meeting.
"They can appear, I’m not against their right, their constitutional right to come together and assemble but not at our theater, not at our Des Plaines Theater. "
"I share the outrage about groups like this but again, I don’t know that there’s anything we can do in this particular case but there is something that we can have a discussion about with regards to establishing standards whether it’s ensuring it’s for entertainment or whatever else," Mayor Andrew Goczkowski said.
There was drama during the meeting when Alderwoman Carla Brookman was repeatedly interrupted by members of the audience as she talked about the diversity of those scheduled to appear at the event.
