(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Private developers who hold the land where a new White Sox stadium may be built recently met with Democratic state legislative leaders about the potential project, a published report says.
Representatives for Related Midwest met separately last week with Senate President Don Harmon of Oak Park and House Speaker Chris Welch of Hillside, the Chicago Sun-Times said this week. The firm owns the 70-acre site at Clark and Roosevelt that is known at “The 78,” which is earmarked for multi-use redevelopment.
Related Midwest reportedly did not ask for state assistance beyond having the Illinois Sports Facilities Authority, which owns current White Sox home Guaranteed Rate Field, redirect financial resources to a new ballpark.
The private pitch for a stadium comes as the idea gains traction among many leaders and organizations and even Major League Baseball's commissioner. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, however, has been cool to the idea of using public assistance for professional sports teams, other than traditional help with infrastructure work.
The Sun-Times reported the governor’s office says developers have not contacted them.
