ORLAND PARK, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A community service officer in southwest suburban Orland Park is recovering from surgery, after being hit by a vehicle while directing traffic Thursday night.

Orland Park Police Commander Ken Rosinski said the officer was directing traffic outside Ashburn Baptist Church, where people were leaving from a gospel concert.

"When our community service officer was trying to stop traffic on southbound Wolf Road to allow vehicles to leave the church parking lot, he was struck by the lead vehicle traveling on Wolf Road and flipped over that vehicle and sustained some very serious injuries."

The officer is recovering after undergoing surgery at Loyola University Medical Center for a fractured leg bone.

Rosinski did not identify the 82-year-old woman accused of running into the officer.

He said the woman was cited for not having a valid drivers license, disobeying the officer, and violating Scott's Law by failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.
