WHEATON, Ill. (WBBM Newsradio) – DuPage County could soon expand its rental rules to include short-term stays like those offered on Airbnb and Vrbo.

The County Board is set to vote Tuesday on a proposal that would allow short-term rentals in unincorporated areas for the first time, with new requirements for annual registration, inspections and a fee.

Currently, county rules only permit rentals of 30 days or longer.

Officials estimate there are up to 300 short-term rentals operating countywide, often identified through complaints about noise or property damage.

The Daily Herald reports the exact amount of the annual fee would be determined at a later meeting. Funds collected would go toward the county’s affordable housing programs, including low-interest loans and down-payment assistance for first-time homebuyers.

County planners say the goal is to bring oversight and consistency to a growing rental market that has so far gone largely unregulated.
