(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Leaders in Elgin are considering banning the sale of gummies and other edible items that are infused with the intoxicating chemical from marijuana.
The ban is supported by Elgin City Council Member Anthony Ortiz, who worries about how some of the products are marketed.
“This is marketed and labeled towards children, it's more attractive to the kid's eye than it is to the adult's eye. And then this, this is just, this is just outrageous,” Ortiz said.
Council Member Tish Powell thinks edibles with THC should be regulated like tobacco, but not banned.
“I would much prefer to see a restriction that requiring that products like these be treated like cigarettes and placed behind the counter and you have to be 21-years-old to purchase them. I think that makes sense,” Powell said.
Supporters say the ordinance is needed, because state lawmakers have failed to regulate edibles with THC.
The Elgin City Council could have a final vote on the ban later this month.
