Elkhart County Health Officer to resign following aggressive behavior: 'Being called a Nazi for doing my job'

Coronavirus Indiana

ELKHART, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Elkhart County, Indiana Health Officer is resigning over what she said is aggressive behavior by some, including elected officials, regarding the pandemic.

Dr. Bethany Wait has held the job for less than a year and she's had enough.

"Being called a liar, being called a Nazi for doing my job," Wait said.

She told WSBT in South Bend she didn't get into the job to argue with and be demeaned by elected officials.

"I didn't get into this job to argue with elected officials. I didn't get in this job to be demeaned by public officials. And that's really what has happened," Wait said. "I did not cause the pandemic, I have not placed an emergency status on the state, but a lot of those fears and anger have been directed straight towards me. And it's becoming more aggressive."

She told WSBT in South Bend there's been aggressive behavior directed toward her from members of the public and elected officials in the county that's seen 38-percent of residents vaccinated. She even said there have been death threats and she feels like she needs to be watching her back.

"It's hard to already work in a very stressful position, but then have to think about watching your back this entire time," Wait said.

The nazi and liar comments came during a public meeting during which the county council shot down her effort to apply for a CDC grant.

"If I am being told I am not allowed to go for those anymore, I don't feel like that is allowing me to do my job," she said.

It was suggested that the grant money would be used to forcibly vaccinate people.

Wait added that two members of the Board of Health have also resigned recently in Elkhart County.
