(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Boy Scouts of America Troop 417 made a sizable donation last weekend to the Elmhurst/Yorkfield Food Pantry.
Troop members, who range in age from 11 to 18, went door-to-door throughout Elmhurst to collect non-perishable food items as part of a national Scouting for Food initiative.
“The scouts walked all the neighborhoods, hung on door knockers that said we would be back on a certain day,” said charter organization representative Dan Olson. “We went back out two weeks later, and those of us that had big enough vehicles picked up whatever packages were left on the step by the people that read the flyers.”
A total of 1,000 pounds of food was collected.
Before dropping it off at the local pantry, Troop 417 took the time to sort through every single item.
“We cross out barcodes, check expiration dates and then just sort it so when [the pantry] gets it, the canned goods and boxed goods and pastas and vegetables and fruits and cans are all sorted for them,” added Olson.
He tells WBBM Newsradio that Boy Scout Troop 417 is part of the Three Fires Council, which includes parts of DuPage County as well as St. Charles and DeKalb.
He estimates that tens of thousands of pounds of food were donated to local pantries during their annual collection drive.
