(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Elmhurst police have warned residents about thefts of mail from mailboxes in the western suburb.

Elmhurst Police said that Monday morning a citizen reported seeing a postal service mailbox’s door open at the corner of 1st Street and Haven Road.

When police checked it out, they discovered the door had been forced open with some type of pry tool.

Police notified the U.S. Postal Service and checked other mailboxes. Authorities said they found another one had been pried open on Cottage Hill Avenue between Park and Adelaide Streets.

Officials said thieves often use stolen mail to carry out identity theft crimes using financial documents. Residents who mailed any such documents should cancel the documents or place a fraud alert on their account.

Elmhurst police also suggested that anyone who has to send mail—especially anything with financial documents or other sensitive materials—should send it from inside a post office, and not via an outside mailbox.
