CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A new festival comes to Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood this weekend.
The Englewood Excellence Music Festival kicks off its inaugural year Saturday with local vendors, youth activities and renowned musical acts, including Grammy-nominated R&B artist Syleena Johnson.
But Leon Walker, organizer and managing partner with DL3 Realty, said that the site of the festival at 63rd and Halsted street's Englewood Square, now in its fifth year, is symbolic of the good that local and private investment can do for the community.
"We think this is a shining example of how community development when it's done right can be resilient, it can encourage others to make investment," Walker told WBBM Newsradio.
Walker added that the Englewood Music Fest will bring together successful artists, business owners, community leaders and a family atmosphere with the hope of having a lasting impact on local youth.
"They can create a different vision for the youth to look at. As you know many have said before, you can only be what you can see. The corollary is that you can't be what you can't see," Walker said.
