EVANSTON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A landmark in downtown Evanston is out of commission due to faulty maintenance.
The namesake fountain at Fountain Square in downtown Evanston will remain dry for the rest of the summer while crews fix the water flow.
Evanston city workers discovered low water pressure when the fountain was switched on back in the spring. Engineers investigated the problem, and discovered waterstops that were the wrong size and installed against the manufacturer's recommendations, leading to water loss.
The city is now taking estimates to repair the problem. It added the contractor that did the work will be held accountable.
The north plaza where the fountain is located remains open for seating, events, and public gatherings.
