EVANSTON, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Senior citizens who live alone in Evanston can sign up for regular well-being checks from the police department.
It’s called RUOK- a voluntary program where Evanston seniors living alone can sign up to have someone in the police department call them once a week to check in. If they need help, police will dispatch paramedics.
The Lake County Sheriff’s office has been running such a program for years and credits it with saving the life of a 77-year-old Lake Villa woman in January. The office estimates she was on the floor of her home for 18 hours when deputies arrived after she failed to answer her regular phone call.
Sign up packets are available in-person and can be submitted at the following locations:
-Levy Senior Center, 300 Dodge Ave.
-Fleetwood Jourdain Community Center, 1655 Foster St.
-Evanston Public Library, 1703 Orrington Ave.
-Evanston Police Department, 1454 Elmwood Ave.
Seniors may also call 847-866-5020 to request to participate in the program.
