CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The family of a man convicted of murder two decades ago called for his release before a hearing Tuesday morning.
“We just want justice for him,” said Rosemary Cade. “We want him home, and we need him now.”
Cade was among those on Tuesday who demanded justice for her son, Antonio Porter, who was convicted in 2003 of shooting and killing 28-year-old Laymond Harrison in Chicago's Grand Crossing neighborhood.
Cade said there was no evidence pointing to Porter and accused authorities of coercing then-16-year-old Vernon Andrews, a witness, into identifying Porter.
“He didn't do the murder,” she said. “He wasn't even there. He don't even know the area.”
Following attempts to contact her son, Cade said she and Porter’s son's lawyer have faced pushback.
“When I went down to see him, I couldn't even see him,” she said.
On Tuesday, though, Cade said she still has hope her son will be released.
“I know justice will be done,” she said. “And he will come home. And I get to see him walk out of that terrible prison.”
