CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The city of Chicago will pay nearly $2 million to the family of a woman who died by an apparent suicide in Chicago police custody.
The $1.75 million settlement would resolve a federal civil rights lawsuit filed by the sister of 33-year-old Irene Chavez, who was found dead at a South Side police station in December 2021.
Chavez was arrested on a charge of simple battery after an incident at the Jeffery Pub in South Shore.
Chavez's sister claimed the 10 officers involved in the arrest denied Chavez basic medical care after she repeatedly asserted she was a veteran experiencing PTSD.
Her advocates said Chavez should have been seen by crisis-intervention specialists.
