A forensic excavation was underway in South Elgin this morning, as authorities look for more answers surrounding the 2016 disappearance of Kianna Galvin.
The excavation comes after investigators scanned a residence on the 800 block of Revere Road with ground-penetrating radar (GPR). Investigators said the GPR scan "revealed anomalies beneath the surface that detectives determined warranted further investigation," according to the Kane County State's Attorney.
Galvin was last seen on May 6, 2016, after telling her sister she was going to nearby Jim Hansen Park. Her whereabouts have remained unknown since.
At first, Galvin was considered a runaway. After her disappearance, police interviewed a man who had been messaging Galvin on Facebook. Messages indicated that she was on her way to his house to buy marijuana shortly after 12:30 p.m. the day she disappeared.
The lived in the basement of a home on Revere Road, just five doors down from Galvin's house. He was never charged in Galvin's disappearance. Police said he told them that the girl never entered his house and left after only a few minutes. He also told police Galvin had texted another man, but police didn't find any evidence of those texts, according to court records.
Galvin's parents reported her missing after not hearing from her after a couple of days. Since she was over the age of 16, she didn't qualify for an Amber Alert. Police later found her blood in a neighbor's trash.
A portion of Revere Road will remain closed until the excavation is complete. There are no further details available and police said they will share updates as they learn more.
