(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 29-year-old nurse is accused of diluting morphine that had been prescribed for patients at a rehabilitation center last year.
Sarah Diamond of Woodstock faces two counts of tampering with a consumer product, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago announced Thursday.
Diamond, then an assistant director of nursing at a medical rehabilitation center, tampered with liquid morphine in August 2021 that was meant for two patients, according to an indictment. She knew the diluted substance would be dispensed to them, prosecutors said.
“Patients deserve to have confidence that they are receiving the legitimately prescribed medication and not a diluted substance,” said U.S. Attorney John R. Lausch Jr. said in a news release. “Health care practitioners who illicitly tamper with prescription drugs will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Prosecutors did not explain why Diamond allegedly tampered with the drugs. Her arraignment has not yet been scheduled.
