RIVERDALE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The vicious rains and terrible floods that hit the Chicago area this summer caused extensive damages for some residents, and FEMA has now opened a temporary disaster assistance center in south suburban Riverdale.
Carolyn Osborne was one of those who turned out to the Ivanhoe Park District Recreation Center at 144th and Stewart in Riverdale. But, she did not apply for assistance on Monday.
“We had very little in July…It was like maybe not even to my ankles…We had more in September…It just happens…It’s not even released yet for you to apply, but they did tell me to keep watch on the FEMA disaster website for September,” Osborne said.
Larissa Hale with FEMA was asked about disasters in a changing climate.
“Climate changes, things happen, the weather is always changing…We just try to make sure everyone is prepared, and, in the event something does happen, we can step into to assist. We just encourage people to register,” Hale said.
The Riverdale Center is for those affected by flooding and storms that occurred on June 29 through July 2. It's open until Saturday.
