CEDAR LAKE, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Friday’s dangerous weather brought a tornado to Northwest Indiana – a first for the Chicago region in December in 71 years, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service said the tornado was an EF-0, carrying winds between 65 to 85 mph as it touched down in Cedar Lake, Indiana, some 45 miles southeast of Chicago, and through to Crown Point. The tornado left behind mostly tree damage and downed power lines, but no injuries or death.

The National Weather Service confirmed this is the first December tornado in the Chicago metro area since reliable tracking records began in 1950.

There was a tornado on Dec. 4, 1973, in Iroquois County, which is outside the Chicago area, south of Kankakee.
