CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Beryl will make its way to the Chicago area today and its rain could cause some issues.
“Areas south and east of Chicago especially across Northwestern Indiana and down through, really even Central parts of Illinois, those are the areas that are really at risk for rain that’s heavy enough to cause more significant impacts, with a lot more in the way of standing water and possibly flooding in poor drainage areas,” AccuWeather meteorologist Heather Zehr tells WBBM.
The good news, she said, is the way the storm is tracking, the Chicago area should be spared the more severe weather.
“With the center of the storm passing well to the south and east, it looks like the threat for any kind of tornado activity is likely going to be well-removed from Chicago,” Zehr says.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Flood Watch, beginning this afternoon and extending through Wednesday afternoon, for Central Cook, Eastern Will, Ford, Grundy, Iroquois, Kankakee, Livingston, Northern Cook, Northern Will, Southern Cook and Southern Will Counties. The alert is also in place for parts of Northwest Indiana, including Benton, Jasper, Lake, Newton and Porter Counties.
The NWS warns of creeks and streams possibly rising out of their banks as well as flooding occurring on roads, low-lying areas, fields and basements.
Rain rates could exceed 1 inch per hour, according to the NWS, with up to 4 to 6 inches possible for areas along and east-southeast of the I-55 corridor.
