CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for much of the Chicago area, with periods of heavy rain on the way.
The watch begins at 10 a.m. this morning and extends to tonight. The Flood Watch covers a portion of Northeast Illinois, including Central Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, Northern Cook and Southern Cook Counties.
There is a potential for flash flooding, the rainfall rate at times could be greater than an inch per hour, the NWS says.
Expect the rain to start mid to late-morning. The NWS says, in addition to the showers, there’s a severe thunderstorm threat this afternoon. Lighting and damaging winds are possible, and a brief tornado can’t be ruled out.
Beach Hazard Statements have also been issued for Lake Michigan beaches in Illinois and Indiana. The NWS warns of dangerous swimming conditions beginning this afternoon and continuing into tomorrow. Waves are projected to be between 5 and 9 feet high. The NWS is urging residents to stay out of the water.
The wet weather will hang around until tomorrow morning, AccuWeather says, with sunshine eventually arriving. Tomorrow’s forecasted high will be 77 degrees.
