(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayoral candidate Jesus “Chuy” Garcia says he’s encouraged by a new poll this week that suggests the race for Chicago Mayor is a three-way dead heat right now.

The poll -- for the Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Public Radio and NBC5 -- shows a statistical tie among Garcia, Paul Vallas and Mayor Lightfoot, with Garcia holding a slight lead.

Garcia, a congressman, acknowledges Vallas is gaining ground. He says Vallas hasn't gotten much scrutiny  up to now, but that’s changing.

He cites a media report questioning whether Vallas resides in a suburb; the former schools chief's campaign says that is not the case and he resides in Chicago.

When you’re a front-runner, Garcia says, you’re attacked, as he says he has been.

The poll shows many Chicagoans disapprove of Lori Lightfoot’s job as mayor. Garcia says that’s mostly tied to one issue: public safety.

Like the other challengers, Garcia blames Police Supt. David Brown but says Lightfoot must take responsibility, too. He says her combative nature and poor relationships with other officials has added to the problem.

Lightfoot’s response has been to remind people she gets things done.

Garcia is the guest on “At Issue” this weekend. It airs 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
