(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The city of Gary is getting plenty of new funding aimed at cleaning up downtown, with some help from Hard Rock Casino.

Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana is providing Gary with $3 million in funding, which will be used as matching funds for $3 million in state funding toward blight removal in the downtown area.

“Our vision is to make downtown a livable, walkable destination for individuals,” said Mayor Eddie Melton.

The plan is to begin with city-owned buildings, officials said.

“We really do think that this is going to play a vital role in the overall success of Gary metro’s transit development district,” said Sherri Ziller, the president and CEO of the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority.

Gary leaders said residents will be able to provide feedback and ideas regarding what they want the downtown area to look like moving forward.
