MOKENA, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Creepy clowns like Pennywise, the Joker and Sweet Tooth are racing those who are brave enough to challenge them...in high-speed go-karts.
This Halloween weekend, Accelerate Indoor Speedway, a go-kart electric racing facility in southwest suburban Mokena, is hosting “Out Run the Scary Clown.”
“It’s basically what it sounds like. You get in a cart and then during your race someone dressed in a pretty creepy clown costume comes out on the track, also in a kart and they’re racing you,” said facility manager Nycole Harris.
If you manage to beat the clown in a 14-lap race, not only do you get bragging rights and a good night’s sleep, but also a gift card for a free race.
“For ages 8 through 12, we have a kids clown race and then we have adult karts, our pro-karts, that are [ages] 13 and up. You see everybody from ages 8 to 90 that are running these karts and want to participate and beat the clown,” Harris said.
Due to COVID-19 mitigations, Accelerate Indoor Speedway requires masks be worn by anyone indoors and is taking extra safety precautions.
“After every race we’re sanitizing helmets before we put them back out for use and we’re also sanitizing every kart after every use,” Harris said.
