CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Alumni of a former Catholic high school in River Grove have only until next weekend to save a mosaic on the front exterior of the building.
Demolition has already begun on Guerin College Preparatory High School after low enrollment forced the nearly 60-year-old school to close last year.
Carolyn Bull is an alum from when it was an all-girls school and is leading the fundraising effort to save the 18.5 feet tall by 8 feet wide mosaic of Our Lady of River Grove. She told CBS 2 they have until Aug. 15 to raise $120,000.
“I think there’s a lot of mourning because you are losing something that’s been so important throughout the years,” Bull said.
Around $40,000 has been raised so far. Many of those who’ve donated have shared their memories of the school on the GoFundMe page.
Bull said if they don’t meet the goal, the money will go to an alumni fund.
