CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- President-elect Biden said he wants a national mask mandate, and Governor Pritzker said that would help Illinois.

“I’ve been calling for a national mask mandate for some time," Governor Pritzker said Monday at his daily COVID-19 briefing.

Governor Pritzker in May required that masks be worn in public places; and in August, he strengthened the mandate, saying masks must be worn anytime customers interact with servers.

On Monday, he supported President-elect Biden’s call for a national mandate.

“Think about the states around us and the fact that they don’t have mitigations in many of those states. And that has an effect on Illinois where we do have a mask mandate," Pritzker said.

The governor has tightened restrictions on southern Illinois and in four counties near Chicago: DuPage, Kane, Will, and Kankakee - banning gatherings of 10 or more.
