CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) –Twenty-eight-year-old Jason Ostrego has been charged with aggravated battery and armed violence after prosecutors say he stabbed a man outside an Elgin bar on Jan. 31.
The Kane County State’s Attorney’s office said it started when the Bartlett man got into an argument, shouting racial slurs at an African American man inside the business on North Liberty Street.
Ostrego was escorted outside to the parking lot, where he continued to shout slurs.
Officials said the African American patron later went outside to smoke a cigarette. Ostrego saw him, stabbed him in the chest with a folding knife, and slashed another victim in the face with the knife.
One victim remains hospitalized, while the other was treated at a hospital and released.
On Tuesday, a grand jury added first-degree attempted murder and hate crime charges to the indictment.
Ostrego is currently in custody on a $200,000 bond, his next court date is set for March 23.
