CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A week after the City of Chicago moved migrants into a Kenwood hotel, officials have announced plans to send more new arrivals to a hostel in Greektown.
Although Ald. Bill Conway (34th) said he’s disappointed by the lack of notice from the mayor’s office, the Greektown alderman wrote to residents in his ward that some people in other parts of the country are trying to make a political spectacle out of a humanitarian crisis.
Ald. Andre Vasquez (40th) told CBS 2 the move to the Parthenon House is about getting migrants out of police stations.
“We’re talking about over 13,000 new arrivals, 6,500 of them in shelters, 1,800 of them being minors [and] another 1,700 that are sleeping at police stations and airports,” Vasquez said.
The North Side alderman added that every neighborhood must share some of the responsibility “because the crisis is what it is.”
Conway announced plans to hold a meeting on Wednesday night to share details about the plan, which could call for 130 – 190 migrants staying in the hostel at Jackson Boulevard and Halsted Street. He added that it was not his choice.
The site was previously used as a temporary shelter between October 2022 and February 2023.
