CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Green City Market (GCM) has been providing Chicagoans with fresh produce and other farm fresh foods since 1999, and Executive Director Mandy Moody said that's especially important these days

“Your local farmers are growing food year round, and if we continue to support those local farmers by buying produce and protein from them all year long, we just strengthen the resiliency of our communities and our food system,” Moody said.

GCM's opening day will be at its Lincoln Park Market on April 1 from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., and one item Moody expects to be in high demand is eggs.

“Folks are getting very similarly priced eggs at the farmer market, but the value still remains significantly higher because those eggs are a lot fresher — they're tastier, frankly, because they are fresher, and they are a lot more nutrient-dense,” she said.

As one of GCM's missions is to expand food access throughout Chicago, the nonprofit offers a 2-to-1 match for SNAP recipients, which means they can stretch $25 worth of their benefits into $75 worth of market currency.

“We served 3,000 people last year, and we're aiming to serve even more this year through that GCM For All program,” she said.
