(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Six candidates running for the Republican nomination for governor of Illinois debated Tuesday night, but not in the same place. Three each debated on two different TV stations and Tuesday's Texas elementary school massacre was among the topics.

While candidates all issued their version of “thoughts and prayers”, Downstate Republican Darren Bailey has pushed before to get rid of Illinois’ Firearm Owners ID card and said on Channel 9:

"We’ve seen shootings recently in the city and the state of New York These people had mental issues. It had nothing to do with a gun

On Channel 5, Richard Irvin indicated he favors background checks and improving the FOID card system.

"We need to make sure we support our police and we support our neighbors and our families and our friends and these school children that we don’t allow weapons to get into the hands of criminals and those with mental illnesses."

Jesse Sullivan said that when mass shootings happen, Democrats always want to talk immediately about gun control and limiting the 2nd Amendment.
