(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The owner of a west suburban gun shop says he saw a surge of customers before Gov. Pritzker signed legislation banning assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines in Illinois.
Manny Segarra on Wednesday said most of the customers at his West Chicago store say they need the types of weapons banned by the state to protect themselves from criminals.
Many of those customers also worry the ban is just a first step toward much stricter gun control.
Segarra gun owners feel that lawmakers should spend more time focusing on ways to reduce crime, rather than limiting the gun rights of law-abiding citizens.
Pritzker signed the assault weapons ban, shortly after lawmakers sent the measure to him. The measure was prompted in part by the Highland Park parade shooting. During the July 4 parade, a sniper opened fire on the crowd, killing seven and injuring dozens.
