CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Will the Halloween weather be a trick or a treat?

The answer is none of the above. Today’s forecast will neither be a ruse nor delightful. Bursts of snow showers paired with harsh winds are expected throughout the area today, according to AccuWeather. According to the National Weather Service, it would mark the ninth time since 1884 in Chicago that it snowed on Halloween.

A few snow showers have already developed in the north and northwest suburbs. The National Weather Service says waves of snow showers will be more widespread by 10 a.m. Since temperatures will hover above freezing, any accumulation will be slushy and stick to grassy surfaces. But, visibility will deteriorate, the NWS notes.

A second snow chance for the Chicago area is possible this evening, beginning at about 5 p.m., the NWS says.

Northwest Indiana could be in store for accumulating lake effect snow late tonight and overnight, with AccuWeather forecasting 1 to 3 inches.

Believe it or not, it’s only been four years since the last time Chicago experienced a snowy Halloween. In 2019, 3.4 inches of snow was measured at O’Hare and the high temperature was only 33 degrees, the third coldest Halloween on record.

In addition to dodging snowflakes, no doubt it will be a chilly day to go trick or treating today. High temperatures will be in the mid 30s, but the wind chill will make it feel closer to 20 degrees.

If only Halloween was at the end of the week. By Friday, temperatures will shoot up to the upper 50s.
